Coping With Holiday Stress

Coping with holiday stress can be challenging. Spiritually, a winter celebration has been around since pagan times. Only the focus has changed. So why not change your focus and celebrate the Christmas season in a less stressful way?  During pagan times the winter solstice was celebrated as a looking forward to the abundance of spring during the darker days of winter. Ancient Romans celebrated the festival Saturnalia, honoring the return of the sun. In the 4th Century AD, pagan holidays and festivals were incorporated into religious practice and led to the evolution of Christmas as a winter holiday. In the modern world, Christmas has become a universal celebration that may be considered religious by some, but it also keeps the economy alive. The earth centered roots of winter solstice have been replaced by commercialism. The Christmas season is a time for shopping, decorating, gift giving and parties.  Overextending themselves financially and personally, many people feel stressed by the pressure to participate in holiday activities.

I choose to celebrate a different kind of winter holiday; one where I give meaningful gifts from my heart; one where I feel relaxed and stress free. The purpose of gift giving is to bring happiness to and honor the person receiving the gift. Gifts need not be expensive or even store bought. The most important thing about gifts is the love they represent.  For me, winter is a time for reflection about what is important in life and a time to look forward to what lies ahead.  Winter is a season for contemplation, a time for introspection while waiting for spring. When the flowers bloom after a season of dormancy, we can appreciate their beauty anew. The changing of the seasons symbolically represents changes in our lives. We all go through periods of darkness and emerge into the light. In our lives we move from the dark days of winter into the new life of spring.  The seasons of our earth represent a continuation of the cycles of life. To cope with holiday stress, celebrate life and love.
